Cleaning the portable restrooms that you will see at most any outdoor event isn’t a fun job, but someone has to do it. If it weren’t for someone going around cleaning each of the bathrooms they would become useless in a matter of weeks, or days in some cases. This cleaning process doesn’t really take all that long, but a lot gets done.
Things you’ll need:
•Vacuum-tank truck
•Pressure washer and/or hose
•Toilet chemicals
•Toilet paper
•Bleach
•Pinchers or long tongs
•Face mask
•Rubber gloves
•Scrub brush
•Brick or door prop
1.Prop open the door of the portable restroom. This will not only let it air out for a few minutes before you go in, it will also make it easier for you to work inside and outside the restroom.
2.Put on your gloves and face mask.
3.Pick out any garbage that you see in the toilet itself. These larger items will include diapers, towels, clothing, bottles, cans, and large wads of paper towels. They will clog the vacuum if they are not removed before you start.
4.Screw the vacuum pipe to the toilet.
5.Turn on the vacuum suction. You will need to hold on to the hose for this portion. It will probably feel and smell terrible at this point because you will feel the waste going through the hose. If the hose gets clogged, turn the suction off, unscrew the hose and pull out or break up the clog. Throw whatever clogged the hose into the garbage if it couldn’t be sucked up.
6.Remove the vacuum from the bathroom once you are finished removing all of the waste out of the toilet.
7.Add new toilet chemicals to the toilet.
8.Remove any toilet paper and paper towels that are still in the portable bathroom.
9.Use the hose or pressure washer to clean out the inside of the portable bathroom.
10.Take the scrub brush and the bleach and clean the walls of the bathroom first. Then begin to clean the toilet seat and then the floor. Scrub everything well so you remove any stains and as much of the smell as possible.
11.Spray out the portable bathroom again to rinse out all of the bleach.
12.Refill the toilet with water and restock the toilet paper.
13.Allow the toilet to set with the door propped open to allow it to dry.
14.Bring the waste which should be in the truck’s tank, back to the headquarters where it will be properly disposed of.
Additional Tips:
Be sure to wear gloves during this entire process. There is a lot of disease that could potentially be found in this waste and you will want to protect yourself as much as possible.
Take your time in cleaning the bathroom. While rushing the job may seem like a good idea, the cleaner you get it the first time, the easier it will be keep clean.
